Canada Geese Molting Season: What Ohio Properties Should Expect
Canada geese molting season is one of the most important periods in the goose life cycle, and anyone who wants to manage geese on their property needs to understand it. Whether you run a commercial site, golf course, public park, or residential community in Ohio, knowing what geese are doing in summer makes your planning far more effective.
Here is what you need to know about geese during the summer months.
Molting makes adult geese temporarily flightless
From mid-June through July, adult Canada geese go through their annual process. This involves shedding and regenerating their flight feathers, which leaves them temporarily unable to fly. Because they cannot fly, these geese tend to stay close to water or open grassy areas for safety. This is a critical time to harass the geese before they go through their phase, and to consider different control options, when the birds become grounded and concentrated in specific areas.
Goslings are growing fast
While the adults are molting, goslings are developing rapidly. Initially small and down-covered, goslings grow quickly and begin to show more independence. As they mature, they interact more confidently with the flock and gain coordination and strength. Large groups of goslings and adults can create messy, disruptive situations on properties, especially where people gather to work, play, or relax.
Why this season matters for your property
The summer months are a transitional time on your property. When goose activity is on the rise, this seasonal behavior can be both a challenge and an opportunity. Because adult geese are flightless and families congregate in one location, you may find a higher concentration of geese than usual during this time.
If you have water on site and there is no neighboring pond available to the geese, they will not have many options to leave your property on their own. That is exactly why early planning matters so much during the summer.
Important note on border collies during this season
The use of border collies is not ideal during the months when the geese are flightless. If a property is near a large lake or river front, we can direct geese to that body of water, or walk the geese off of the property to another body of water nearby, humanely. Our dogs will be on leash at all times.
What Ohio Geese Control recommends this time of year
Ohio Geese Control suggests using a chemical deterrent during the molting season. Our team are experts in applying Flight Control® as a turf management solution. This EPA-approved spray makes the grass unpalatable for geese. The application lasts four to five weeks and bundles well with our other techniques.
A qualified Ohio Geese Control staff member can inspect your property and create a safe, effective plan to manage geese during this period, protecting both the birds and your property.
Ohio Geese Control services
Ohio Geese Control uses many geese deterrent techniques including chemical repellent, border collies trained to herd geese, and many other methods. We provide a customized solution based on your property, the number of geese, and the season, working with you to dramatically lower the goose population.
It is humane. It is safe. And it is effective.
